FAQS
Our Approach
We discuss a variety of delivery methods. For instance, to encourage relaxation during labor, we recommend the Lamaze breathing technique. We go through the value of Bradley-style labor support provided by a husband or partner. We discuss how the Alexander technique promotes balance, flexibility, coordination, ease, and freedom of movement. Because labor does not necessarily have to involve really painful contractions, we teach concepts that alleviate anxiety and tension in a manner akin to hypnobirthing. Learning to relax deeply will improve your natural birthing instincts, which will result in a calm and peaceful childbirth experience. Our curriculum equips moms to “give birth in awareness,” akin to the methods taught in Birthing from Within, rather than trying to attain a certain birthing procedure.

This period of time is often called the fourth trimester, and for good reason! Whether this is your first or sixth baby, the postpartum period is a major time of transition for you, your body, and — well — your whole family.
Whereas a birth doula provides support during the actual labor and birth, a postpartum doula provides non-medical support in these important days and weeks following delivery.
This support is emotional and physical, as well as informational. And while the doula does help with infant care, her primary focus is on the mother and her family. The International Childbirth Education Association describes the role as “mothering the mother.”
Small Group Classes
Small-group classes are a great alternative to hospital birth classes. They are appropriate for both families planning their first birth and experienced families looking to brush up on birth basics. These comprehensive classes cover topics such as pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, newborn care, and postpartum needs. We encourage sharing information and experiences between families, as we can all learn from each other.
Private Classes
Private classes include the same information covered in group classes, except they are offered in your home and arranged around your schedule. Private instruction allows for more flexibility and individualization. Private classes can also benefit those who may be apprehensive about being involved in group activities. The freedom to ask personal questions that otherwise may not be addressed in a group setting is an additional benefit of private classes.
Comfort Measures for Labor
Hands-on, physical preparation for labor and birth makes this our most popular class. This 3-hour workshop is a fantastic addition to your childbirth education, as a refresher, or just as a stand-alone class. The central focus of this course is to practice comfort techniques. We demonstrate and rehearse different positions for labor, birth, breathing, vocalization, therapeutic touch, visualization, relaxation, and other comfort measures. Learn how to create a peaceful environment, use tools such as a birth, and much more. Partners learn ways to be supportive in labor! This class includes a take-home packet to help you remember what we covered. We get rave reviews from this class; don’t miss out!
Breastfeeding Classes
Plan to give your baby the best possible start. Come to our breastfeeding class and learn about the benefits, getting started, and common problems encountered in the first few weeks.
Whether you’re delivering your first or fifth child, childbirth classes can help you prepare to meet the challenges of labor and delivery. Consider the opportunities:
- Learn things you never knew about labor, delivery, and postpartum care. Find out how to identify the signs of labor and understand your changing body.
- Address your fears By discussing them with other women who probably share the same concerns. The instructor can dispel myths and help put your mind at ease.
- Connect with your partner or labor coach. By understanding the process of childbirth, your partner can discover ways to support you during labor.
- Discuss and learn options for handling pain. You’ll practice methods such as breathing techniques, relaxation, and visualization for coping with contractions. Classes also cover the pros and cons of common medications, such as epidural blocks.
- Get the basics on medical interventions and possible complications. Find out how routine interventions can influence the course of labor.
- Brush up on newborn care. Topics include choosing a pediatrician, breast-feeding, testing and procedures, and more.

We cover several different birthing techniques. For example, we encourage the Lamaze method of breathing during labor to promote relaxation. We discuss the importance of husband- or partner-coached labor support like the Bradley method. We touch on the benefits of ease and freedom of movement, balance, flexibility, and coordination that the Alexander technique encourages. We teach principles that help remove fear and tension that are similar to hypnobirthing because severe pain does not have to be part of labor. Learning intense relaxation will enhance natural birthing instincts that lead to a calm and serene birth experience. Rather than seek to achieve a particular birthing process, our curriculum prepares mothers to “give birth in awareness,” similar to the techniques taught in Birthing from Within.
